Diabetes and Dental Care: Tooth Loss is More Common Than You Think





Among complications like heart disease, blindness or chronic skin infections, tooth loss may also be a more significant problem for diabetics than previously thought, according to new research.

Studies have shown that people with type 2 diabetes who have periodontal disease are more likely to develop worsened glycemic control, said George W. Taylor, from the Schools of Dentistry and Public Health at the University of Michigan.



















Worsening glycemic control, in turn, can lead to systemic inflammation and infection that may bring about tooth loss in adults.



Greater tooth loss associated with diabetes

The current study analyzed trends in diabetes and periodontal disease over 40 years based on data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 37, 609 individuals were included in the study, which found that the rate of tooth loss increased with age. People with diabetes, too, were the most likely to suffer tooth loss.

The rate of tooth loss was the highest among non-hispanic blacks with diabetes, the study found, while all ethnic groups experienced greater tooth loss after the age of 60.

To avoid early tooth loss, experts recommend brushing teeth twice daily and flossing daily. Avoiding smoking and sugary foods may also help prevent periodontal disease.

"Given the study’s results, there is a need to improve dental hygiene and increase awareness of the risk among patients with diabetes," a news release on the study stated.

An experienced midwife will help you to find the best side position to help your baby to turn.

Try out different positions to see what’s most comfortable. You could:

Stand up and lean on the bed or your partner.
Kneel down on a mat or pillow and lean on the seat of a chair or birth ball.
Kneel with one leg raised to make lots of room in your pelvis for your baby to come out.
Get on all fours to help ease backache. It’s likely to be less painful for you and may also help your baby get into a better position for birth.
Sit for a while in a chair or on a birth ball, then get up and walk around.
Rock your hips to help your baby to move down.

Who you choose as your birth partner may make a difference too. You’re more likely to have a positive experience if you have someone with you who isn’t part of the hospital staff, but also isn’t a friend or family member. A good friend, family member or your partner will also be able to provide excellent support as a birth partner.

Think carefully about who you want to have with you during your labour and birth. You’ll need someone who won’t panic, believes you can do it, and is confident enough to talk to health professionals on your behalf.

You may like to choose two birth partners. Keep in mind that some hospitals dislike having two extra people in the birth room at the same time, due to lack of space. Your hospital may allow you to have one of your two birth partners in the room at a time, though.

Discuss this with your midwife and ask for your requests to be put in your notes well before your due date. Your preference is what matters.

why you should never eat green potatoes?




Green = vegetables = good, right?

Not when it comes to potatoes.

Here’s an important piece of information that my mother taught me years ago, but fewer and fewer people these days seem to know about. Green in potatoes indicates the presence of a rather harmful toxin. When you see patches of green in your potatoes as you peel them, cut out the green parts entirely and discard them.





















What is the green? Actually it’s chlorophyll. Not bad for you at all. But the chlorophyll indicates that the potato has been exposed to sunlight. And where the potato has been exposed to light is where a natural toxin in the potato (solanine) becomes concentrated at harmful levels. So, never store your potatoes on the counter. Always keep them in a cool, completely dark place.



Solanine is a natural defense mechanism of the potato to ward off fungus and pests. It will also be triggered when a potato is bruised, so if your potato is at all damaged or bruised, discard it.
According to the Wikipedia, deep-frying potatoes at a high temperature (306°F) effectively lowers the level of toxins. But boiling them (212°F) has no effect. Best to stay on the safe side and just cut away the green parts. The NIH website mentions that the potato sprouts can also have concentrated solanine, so those too should never be eaten.

Moles

Moles aren’t generally harmful. Of course, it’s important to know the signs of skin cancer. Mostly moles are just unsightly. You can get rid of moles by crushing garlic and applying to the mole, then covering with a bandage for at least four hours a day. Apple cider vinegar can work too but it’s a bit less effective.

Blackheads

Really the key to getting rid of blackheads is to keep your pores clean. You can open up your pores with steam before washing. Apply a natural astringent like apple cider vinegar and then a moisturizer like coconut oil.

Age spots

I’m a big fan of taking on aging with grace, but sometimes age spots can make you feel self conscious. They’re caused by too much exposure to the sun. Fortunately, lemon juice acts like a bleaching agent for the skin, so applying to the skin a few times a day will lighten up dark spots. Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen!
